3 Things you should be tracking with your analytics software?

What should we be tracking?

This is a question we get asked quite a often – mainly by new customers as well as people who aren’t certain if what they’re looking at adds any value to their daily business time usage.

If you’ve ever used an analytics tool, you will identify with how addictive it can be to watch the traffic coming in, see where everyone visitor is from and what they are looking at as it happens in realtime.

Unfortunately this isn’t really all that helpful in the bigger scheme of things, unless you are waiting on the edge of your seat to see when traffic spikes occur in order to keep your hosting package running smoothly.

For most people the overall analytics is just not that useful. It may well be ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ to any number crunchers out there, or any ‘data geeks’, but that’s probably about it.

That’s why we would like to tell you a bit more about what we’ve found and what features are a must have when dealing with web analytics as a whole.

Make sure to identify visitors

Identifying visitors is extremely important and should be the first thing you add to your website or web application. This makes sure that everytime they perform some action or event you are able to associate it to them and contact them if there is any issue along the process. This should be done on both Registration and Login forms. Capturing email addresses here is very very useful. How to identify a user.

Create goals

Goals are one of the most useful things you can add to your analytics, it means that when some action or event is triggered, statistics are collected and other actions, events or goals can be subsequently triggered. What is really useful is if you add notifications into the mix. This means that an email can be sent out each time a goal is triggered – we have also added the ability to trigger webhooks to interact with other applications at this stage.

Setting up a goal for advert campaigns, people using a feature or signing up means that all the information becomes immediately available to you when you need it, without having to create custom reports later down the line.

Integrating events and tags to your site

Take a look at our Javascript API to learn how to send us event information or tag a visitor.

This information will appear in the Advanced Visitor Visibility panel as it happens. Wether this is what a visitors searches for on your website or when they add a product to their cart, you will see exactly what everybody is doing in even greater detail.
